About the Youth Criminal Justice Act
The Youth Criminal Justice Act is legislation that oversees crimes relating to minors. It applies to youths/young person’s ages 12 to 17 facing criminal charges. The primary goal of the Youth Criminal Justice Act is to rehabilitate youth offenders rather than punish them. If a youth is charged with a severe or heinous crime, they may be eligible for adult punishment. However, this is a last resort. The Youth Criminal Justice Act acknowledges that children and teens are less mature, developed, and aware of their actions than adults. It focuses on getting young people/youths professional treatment and counseling and helping them grow into responsible, law-abiding individuals.
